Project description

Earlier the biomass plant at Asnæsværket in Kalundborg has been one of Denmark’s largest coal fired power plants. To reduce their CO2 emission and contribute significantly to the green transition, Ørsted A/S received support from the Danish Energy Agency to convert the plant from using coal to wood chips.

Before the new, converted plant could be taken into use, it had to be CE marked to comply with the Machine Directive’s requirement of health and safety as well as having the technical documentation prepared.

Process Engineering’s role in the project was to Review the existing documentation and CE mark the biomass plant at Asnæsværket i Kalundborg to comply with the current directives and standards.

The process

The CE marking of the biomass plant was done in four phases:

  1. Examination of the extent of the CE marking.
  2. Review the documentation in the technical file and prepare the overall risk assessment of the plant.

The documentation includes machine descriptions, drawings (2D, 3D and PID), components, calculations, managing descriptions, risk assessment, technical reports, test reports, manual, declaration of conformity (directives and standards) and CE marking of components and units.

The risk assessment includes scope, VSSK, interfaces and action log.

  3. Preparation of the declaration of conformity.
  4. CE marking sign.

The project was carried out by two of our employees from Asnæsværket in Kalundborg in collaboration with a working group consisting of a project manager and safety manager from Ørsted and an electrician from another supplier.

We worked closely with the customer and had weekly status meetings to follow up on the project’s progress. At the same time, everyone in the working group was involved in the preparation of the risk assessment, which is a fixed procedure in CE marking.

Service and scope of the project

Our service and the scope of the project include:

  • Review of the documentation for the CE marking
  • Risk assessment of interfaces between units in the plant
  • Preparation of the declaration of conformity
  • Preparation of the CE marking sign
