Project description

Linde Gas (former AGA) is Northeren Europe’s leading industrial gas company that ensures stable supplies to the Danish market. In 2018 they made an agreement with LINDØ port of ODENSE to place their first Danish CO2-terminal at Lindø’s Terminal Nord. From here they deliver CO2, which has been extracted as a by-product from other productions, directly to the customers.

Process Engineering’s role in the project was to handle the entire technical part of the establishment of the CO2-terminal with preparation of pipe design, update of PID, and design and calculation of one and a half kilometer long pipe (transfer line) to transport the -40 C degrees CO2 from the wharf to the terminal.

The process

We participated in the project with a project manager, project engineer and technical designers and had the responsibility to handle the technical part of the project. Through the entire project we had close collaboration and daily coordination with the customer and solved the project both from our own office and from site at Lindø.

We prepared the pipe design and proved the pipe dimensions according to the requested capacity and ensured that the PID (Piping and Instrument Diagram) was updated until the final layout. Also we prepared the tender material. During installation and commissioning we participated on site in cooperation with the customer’s commissioning manager and supported in the technical part such as line walk and supervision of the installation work. Moreover, we supported in SIL classification (Safety Integrity Level) by reviewing all equipment for the terminal to ensure the right safety level, and we also helped with approval at third party in regard to PED (Pressure Equipment Directive) and preparation of user manual for the plant.

Especially, the pipe connection between the wharf and the terminal was a challenge to calculate. Today, CO2 is unloaded once a week, and when the pipe had to be placed underground, it had to be taken into account that the pipe contracts when -40 C degrees of CO2 flows through it. At the same time, the location of the pipe at the wharf was changed during the project, which meant that the pipe end was not long enough for the ship to connect to the terminal. Therefore, we designed custommade pipe carriages with flanges that are manually rolled out, so the pipe ends are positioned in the best way for the ship.

Service and scope of the project

Our service and the scope of the project include:

  • Preparation of pipe specifications
  • 3D pipe design and isometrics for workshop manufacturing
  • Pressure loss calculations in pipe dimensions
  • Stress strain calculations for temperature extensions and location of pipe supporter
  • Design of steel structures and strength calculation
  • Preparation of tender material
  • Technical and commercial support in technical clarification and contracting
  • Participation in HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Studies)
  • SIL support
  • Creation and handling of MOC (Management of Change)
  • Creation and management of defect list
  • Planning and execution of project review with relevant stakeholders
  • Participation in creation of user manual
